Motorhome Rental Guide
There’s a lot to consider when you’re hiring a motorhome. Which type is best for you? What’s the cost of hiring a motorhome? What’s included with your rental? How does hiring work?
We cover everything you need to know if you’re considering hiring a motorhome for the first time to embark on your ultimate road trip!
Why hire a motorhome?
FREEDOM
Compared with other types of holiday, a motorhome gives you total freedom to explore at your own pace. You aren’t tied to someone else’s fixed itinerary and don’t need to find yourself stuck with pre-booked accommodations. You can change your plans whenever you like and go wherever the mood takes you, discovering new places and experiences along the way.
NO PURCHASE COSTS
Buying a motorhome is a significant financial commitment. If you haven’t done much motorhome travelling, hiring is a great way to test the waters before deciding whether to buy your own motorhome. You can try out different types of vehicle and see what fits best for you.
Hiring a motorhome is also ideal if you only plan to travel a few times a year. Like any vehicle, they need regular maintenance and occasional repairs. When you hire a motorhome, these are all the responsibility of the rental company, so you don’t ever have to think about the cost or inconvenience of servicing.
FLEXIBILITY
Renting a motorhome also offers tremendous flexibility as you can choose a vehicle that fits the specific needs of each trip. Travel in a smaller motorhome for exploring solo or as a couple, or a large motorhome for a family and friends holiday.
CHOICE OF PLACES

Always check local regulations, signs and restrictions. | Limited to towns, cities and tourism areas. | Limited to soft ground, such as campsites, farms, private land with the landowner’s permission and some European national parks. What type of motorhome should you choose?

Everyone has different priorities but here are a few things to think about when choosing a motorhome to hire.
SIZE
The number of berths will probably be one of the first things you consider when choosing a motorhome. Most offer an even number of berths e.g. 2, 4 or 6 berths. Some will have beds that are all suitable for adults, while others are best for families, offering smaller beds for children.
Think about what’s most practical for your travelling group. For example, a 4 berth motorhome with 6 seats might be ideal if you plan to camp alongside friends or family. You could have 2 adults and 2 children sleeping in berths, with 2 adults camping nearby. Campers will also gain some extra weather protection from the motorhome’s awning.
MANUAL VS AUTOMATIC
Choosing between manual and automatic drive will depend on your driving experience and where you plan to travel. If you are used to manual driving, you may prefer the greater control and fuel efficiency. However, automatic could be easier if you haven’t driven a motorhome before. It’s especially useful in hilly areas, which is ideal if you plan to head off the beaten track. If you prefer to drive manual, you’ll find that many motorhomes have cruise control, so this can also help with the long miles.
FEATURES AND FACILITIES
To ensure your motorhome includes everything you need for a comfortable trip, you’ll need to consider features such as kitchen appliances, bathroom facilities, storage space and bike racks. While an older vehicle might have fun, quirky elements, more modern motorhomes often come with advanced features and luxurious facilities. These can include well-equipped kitchens, comfortable king size beds and Bluetooth stereo systems. If these are among your essentials or even ‘nice-to–haves’ then they can make a big difference to your travel experience.
What’s the cost of hiring a motorhome?
The cost of hiring a motorhome can vary based on factors like the size of the vehicle, the duration of your hire, and the season. Typically, larger motorhomes and peak summer or holiday periods (e.g. Christmas week) are more expensive. Most motorhome rental companies will also have a minimum rental period, which might be longer in high season, and this is usually around 3-5 days.
HIDDEN EXTRAS
Be aware of hidden extras such as cleaning fees, mileage limits and additional insurance costs. Reputable hiring companies will make this information clear, but you should still always read the fine print to avoid unexpected charges.
It is also good to be aware of any damage costs – whether it’s a broken plate or wine stain, accidents happen. Both individuals and hiring companies will usually have these charges listed in their terms and conditions.
When renting a car, it’s standard practice to walk around the vehicle when you collect it to document any damage and make sure it is recorded. Follow the same process for a motorhome too. At collection, you’re likely to be shown where everything is, from water and waste to how to use everything. This is a great time to walk around the vehicle, look for any problems and make sure they’re recorded.
FUEL AND ACCOMMODATION
You’ll need to factor in fuel costs when budgeting for your trip. Larger motorhomes usually consume more fuel, which can add significantly to your expenses if you’re planning a big road trip. Save some expense by looking at companies that offer more fuel-efficient motorhomes.
Also remember that a motorhome combines your transport and accommodation. This means you are potentially still saving money compared to separate expenses for hotels, coaches, trains, taxis or car rentals.

LONG HIRE DEALS
Many companies offer discounts for long-term hires. If you’re planning an extended trip, discounted rates often kick in when you rent for more than 2 weeks.
Where should you hire from?
You have two options for motorhome hire: you can hire from a company or from an individual.
HIRING FROM A MOTORHOME COMPANY
Specialist companies offer numerous advantages for hiring a motorhome. They can provide a range of vehicles that will be well-maintained and serviced regularly. Their motorhomes will also be professionally cleaned, so you know you’ll be entering a spotless vehicle.
Many motorhome companies also offer comprehensive insurance and breakdown cover, while some allow unlimited mileage. This removes much of the time and hassle, so your hiring should be a smooth, straightforward process. They’ll be able to provide expert advice on using the motorhome as well as travel tips.
HIRING FROM INDIVIDUALS
Private motorhome hire from an individual is ideal if you’re looking for a unique experience, like a vintage VW camper. Owners often name their motorhomes and add bespoke interiors, so these vehicles can offer a personalised and nostalgic travel experience.
However, you should keep in mind that they might not provide a comprehensive inventory – you could need to bring your own kitchen equipment or outdoor chairs. An older vehicle will also inevitably have some wear and tear, so it may not be in perfect condition.
Whether you choose to hire from a company or an individual, always read the terms and conditions carefully. Ensure you understand exactly what is included and what your responsibilities are. Know what questions you should be asking.
What to ask when hiring a motorhome

You should make sure you’re comparing like for like when choosing where to hire from. You also need to be aware of any restrictions or requirements on your part of the hiring agreement.
What is included in the motorhome rental price?
Check whether the cost includes things like insurance and breakdown cover, and what sort of coverage this offers. Find out about any additional fees such as European travel cover, extra drivers or pet charges.
What is the fuel policy?
The most common fuel policy for hiring agreements is full-to-full. This means the motorhome will come with a full tank of fuel and you must return it with a full tank too. Similarly, it might specify same-to-same, so if it comes with half a tank you need to return it with at least half a tank. When you collect your motorhome, it’s worth scoping out the most convenient fuel stop before you return the vehicle.
What is the mileage policy?
Some companies will have a limit on the number of miles you can drive with the motorhome, with charges for exceeding the mileage. When you pick up the vehicle, you’ll need to note down the mileage (or take a photo of it), then you’ll be able to plan out your journeys and keep track.
This may not be ideal if you’ve got your heart set on a long road trip. If you want the freedom to drive without the worry of tracking miles, unlimited mileage is probably your best choice.
What are the deposit and cancellation terms?
Check when you need to pay the deposit (sometimes called a ‘security bond’), how soon you’ll get it back and what might be deducted from it. Some companies ask for it in advance, while others will allow you to pay it when you collect the motorhome.
Cancellation terms can vary enormously. However, generally, as you get closer to the hire dates, less and less of the cost is refundable.
Are there any restrictions on where you can travel?
Some hiring companies might recommend that you only use officially recognised campsites. They might specify that the motorhome can’t be taken ‘off-road’ for wild camping. If you’re planning to travel to a festival or other event, it’s worth double checking that this is allowed.
What documentation do you need to provide?
You’ll usually need to provide proof of identification and a copy of your driving licence. Check which types of identification are accepted.
What is the policy on pets?
Many hiring companies allow pets in their motorhomes, but there may be some restrictions. For instance, they may decide that larger vehicles with more berths are suitable for pets, yet not their smaller vehicles. Their policy may also have a limit on the number of pets allowed. If they do allow pets, you should expect an additional charge to cover extra cleaning. They may also require any pets to be confined to an enclosure when inside the vehicle, so check first before planning a trip with dogs or other pets.
Is there a comprehensive walkthrough of the motorhome?
Will someone show you how everything works in the motorhome? A manual will prove a good guide, but having someone talk you through the various features can be highly useful. From switches for kitchen appliances to how to extend the awning, a walkthrough is the ideal opportunity to ask plenty of questions before you set off.
What comes with the motorhome?

Always check what’s included, both in the vehicle and within your hire agreement. Be certain whether your hiring terms include insurance and breakdown cover, and if there is a mileage limit. Find out if you can easily add on extras like European travel coverage.
Some motorhome rentals will come fully equipped with kitchen equipment and outdoor furniture, while others might require you to bring your own. Think about what you consider essentials or simply nice-to-haves. Listings might be vague about an exact inventory, but knowing what you’re getting can make preparing for your trip much easier. If you’re unsure, get in touch to check, considering things like:
How comprehensive is the kitchen equipment? Are there enough plates, knives and forks or will you have to immediately wash up everything after every meal? Are any cleaning supplies included? What bedding and linen is there? Does the motorhome include outdoor furniture? Is there a TV? Does the cab have built-in satnav? Is there a first aid kit? Do they provide you with additional supplies for consumables, like LPG bottles?
Collecting and returning your motorhome
COLLECTING
Typically, you’ll need to show your driving licence and finalise some paperwork before you can drive away. The hire company will give you a walkthrough of the vehicle, explaining how everything works. This is your chance to ask any questions about using the motorhome or anything else, such as what to do in case of a breakdown or emergency.
RETURNING
Your hiring terms will specify the condition the motorhome must be returned in. When you return it, the company will inspect the vehicle and check the inventory before returning your security deposit.

PLAN YOUR ROUTES
If you’re only used to driving a car, you’ll need to remember to check for any road restrictions on your route, such as low bridges or narrow roads. You’ll have to plan your parking carefully too as height-restricted car parks (like a multistory) usually won’t be suitable for a motorhome.
PLAN YOUR COOKING
Prepare simple meals – most people don’t want to spend ages cooking when you could be exploring or relaxing with friends and family. Check how many hobs you’ve got and remember that you’ll probably be using a smaller kitchen than you’re used to. Consider cooking smelly foods outside on a BBQ to keep the motorhome fresh.
SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES
One of the best parts of motorhome travel is being able to explore unique and beautiful places. Shopping and dining at local businesses will enrich your road trip experience and help to support the communities you visit.
MAKE FRIENDS
Talk to other people on site – you’ll often learn something about the local area, like good cafes, the best beaches or the nicest walks to explore. You might even make a friend who knows a little more about motorhomes than you do.
LEAVE NO TRACE
Aim to leave a light footprint everywhere you travel. Demonstrate respect for nature and the local area by cleaning up after yourself and disposing of waste properly. Be a responsible tourist by opting for reusable water bottles, coffee cups and shopping bags.
TRAVELLING ABROAD
Be sure to familiarise yourself with the driving regulations in the country you’re visiting, including speed limits and laws regarding alcohol consumption while driving. It’s also a good idea to buy a European driving kit, as some countries require you to carry specific safety items in your vehicle.
